Explore the different types of backflow preventers used in fire sprinkler applications, relevant codes, and approvals. In this course, we'll review the benefits of using single detector checks, double check assemblies, double check detector assemblies, reduced pressure zone assemblies, reduced pressure detector assemblies, and flood detection considerations.

In particular, we'll compare and contrast the advantages and code compliance of type I and II detector assemblies. We'll also go over what to look for when selecting a backflow preventer, including size requirements and labor resources.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand why and where backflow assemblies are used in fire protection systems
  • Understand the degree of hazard and how that can affect backflow selection by the AHJ
  • Identify key characteristics for backflow model selection in fire sprinkler applications
  • Compare the differences between type I and II detector assemblies
  • Learn which approval agencies certify backflow preventers for use in fire sprinkler systems
  • Learn how flood detection systems are used in conjunction with a backflow
